Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's independence day, but in the Mexican city of Puebla and all around America, it is still a cause for a party, which businesses around Athens fully support.
As many students and residents flock to the bars to celebrate and imbibe the spirits of the holiday, of the nine uptown bars surveyed, six bolstered their stock of Corona, XX and tequila in preparation for Cinco de Mayo.
The holiday sort of sells itself. It's like St. Patrick's Day but on a much smaller scale
said David Frasier, manager of Cat's Eye. People are just going to come out and enjoy the night.
Bars with special deals and festivities include the Pigskin Sports Bar and Grill, The Union Bar and Grill, Cat's Eye Saloon, Tony's Tavern, Broney's Alumni Grill and Casa Cantina.
Even the bars that don't have special promotions are still planning for extra customers on Cinco de Mayo.
I mean we have karaoke so I'm sure that will be extra ridiculous said Cynthia Bettcher of the Smiling Skull Saloon. We just want people to stop by and have a good time if they're out.
For those who are underage and make the pilgrimage to the dining halls every day, Mexican-themed dinners will be available with the swipe of an OU I.D.
Gwyn Scott, executive director of Culinary & Dining Operations, said that special dinners on days such as Cinco de Mayo not only help draw people to the dining halls, but also help boost the morale of the dining hall employees. She added that dining halls and Grab N Go's are allowed to have three to four special dinners each quarter.
We can see that students gravitate towards halls that are having programs
Scott said.
