After two years of planning, hard work and a few snags, Brick City Records found out the hard way that producing a compilation CD isn’t an easy task.
“We had a lot of hold-ups,” David Polster, Brick City’s vice president of production, said. “There were some graphic design issues, a couple of problems getting songs and then we had to get everything mastered. It took a lot longer than expected.”
The compilation CD, Sounds for the City, was released March 28, and its release is being celebrated this weekend. Brick City Records held a release show at Casa Nueva last night and has another one tomorrow. The show tomorrow will feature two of the artists on the CD: Jéan P and Pandaz.
After all the work put into the album, Polster said he is pleased with the outcome.
“When you produce something, it becomes your life for however long it takes,” Polster said. “I’m happy it’s finally tangible.”
Alex Randall, who held Polster’s position as VP of production last year, echoed Polster’s sentiments.
“I’m pretty pleased with it, and I think it turned out really well,” Randall said.
“Everyone in the organization did a great job, and this wouldn’t have been possible without all the help from my peers.”
Although the idea of a compilation record first came up when discussing ways to raise money for the organization, Brick City Records decided to give 75 percent of its profits to The Gathering Place, which aids in the recovery of mental illness.
“We’re really happy to not only be able to showcase some of the fantastic musicians who have played in the Athens area, but to also have the opportunity to give back to the city that lets them share their talents with us,” said Lianna Snyder, Brick City Records’ vice president of A&R.
The CD features songs from 12 regional bands, all of which have played in Athens at least one time. Although some now live as far away as Cleveland, others still play regularly in Athens, including groups such as the First Street Heat.
Sounds for the City is available on iTunes and other online music retailers, including the Bobcat Store. The CD also will be available at tomorrow’s show and in the OU RTV buiding, or can be purchased from any Brick City Records member. The CD costs $10, unless it is purchased from the Bobcat Store ($12).
