Women's Golf: 'Cats travel to MAC tourney

For the final time of the 2010-2011 season, and for some, the final time ever for Ohio, the Bobcats will travel to Nashport, Ohio, for the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Longaberger Golf Course will be the site where some Bobcats will finish their careers, and a site that all upperclassmen are familiar with.

“The girls have played it and played it well,” Coach Kelly Ovington said. “My juniors and seniors and I have one sophomore going that have played it a few times and they all try to play it in the summer.”

The 7,243-yard course will play host to the event that Ohio finished seventh in last spring and tied for fourth in during the fall. Ovington said she hopes the spring edition will yield better results, but consistency is important.

“I think our keys to victory are just going after those pars and keep big numbers from creeping in there,” Ovington said. “Everybody’s going to have an errant shot or a shot that doesn’t go exactly the way they planned, and it’s how we react to that which will be key.”

The Bobcats are coming off a seventh place finish in the Falcon Invitational, where senior Jordan Fesh had a top five finish. The rugged courses and elements the Bobcats have faced this spring would best prepare them for the MAC Tournament, Fesh said.

“We’ve played on many courses this spring that will help us prepare for Longaberger and we’ve played in tough conditions as well,” Fesh said. “I think we’re able to handle everything Longaberger has to throw at us.”

Friday’s first round action will begin with tee-times starting at 8:30 a.m. Six Ohio golfers will make the trip to Nashport, with Fesh, Meryl Weaver, Sarah Tranelli, Erin Cahill and Megan Weaver playing in the event. Freshman Kara Brinkmann will make the trip as well.

Western Michigan, who won last week at the Falcon Invitational, won the Fall Preview shooting a 48 over 624. Akron’s Hanna Ek won the individual title with a 5 over 149.
