Students will now be able to enroll in major-specific junior level composition courses, after Faculty Senate approved a plan to establish “Junior Equivalency” classes.
A student must take two JE courses, which must be at least two credit hours each, to substitute one junior-level composition course.
“The intent is to give departments as much freedom as possible,” College of Fine Arts Senator Allyn Reilly said. “We want to encourage departments to take existing courses in the major and morph them into JE courses.”
There are “insufficient numbers of Junior Composition courses to fill demand” with the move to semesters, according to the resolution.
“As departments develop these courses, hopefully it will take some pressure off of the existing J courses,” Reilly said.
Students must develop their writing skills specific to their major and create 10-15 total pages of original writing in each course.
The University Curriculum Council will monitor the standards of JE courses.
