Grammy-winning guru blurs folk-country line

Five-time Grammy winner Mary Chapin Carpenter is set to take the stage in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium Sunday night as the Ohio University Campus Involvement Center presents “An Evening with Mary Chapin Carpenter.”

In her almost 25-year career, Carpenter has accumulated numerous awards and accolades, including five Grammy awards, 15 Grammy nominations and four No. 1 singles. She was honored recently with the Americana Association’s Spirit of Americana Free Speech in Music Award.

Of Carpenter’s 12 albums, three have received Grammy nominations, with her album Stones in the Road winning the 1995 Grammy for Best Country Album.

Carpenter’s latest album, The Age of Miracles, released in 2010, was among those nominated for a Grammy.

According to her website, the album blends “personal tales of discovery and experience with more distant and imagined stories of one’s purpose and relationship to the universe.”

Although her first record label, Columbia Records, marketed her as a country singer, her music is often considered a combination of folk and country. In 2006, Carpenter left Columbia Records to sign with Rounder Records.

As of yesterday, $17,700 of Carpenter’s $18,000 contract fee had been covered by ticket sales. Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of Ohio University’s Campus Involvement Center, said he expects final ticket sales will cover the cost.
