Athens bands Elemental Groove Theory and The Grove will team up tonight along with Soap to perform in support of veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mike Brokamp, Elemental Groove Theory’s keyboardist, said that, because Friday is Veterans Day, a show honoring veterans just seemed to make sense.
“We wanted to do a show with Soap here at The Union, 18 W. Union St., after having played with them in Illinois, and when we heard the show was the day before Veterans Day, we were hoping to set up some sort of charity,” Brokamp said. “The Veterans Service Commission will be making one dollar for every five made at the show on Thursday.”
Twenty percent of the proceeds from the show will go to the Veterans Service Commission, a national organization dedicated to the aid of U.S. soldiers and the families of soldiers.
The Union also will serve $1 Miller High Life. For every cap or tab collected, Miller High Life has pledged to donate 10 cents to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, an organization that helps returning veterans transition to a civilian life.
Soap, a dance-rock fusion group from Minneapolis, will support Elemental Groove Theory along with local band The Grove.
“We have heard about the Athens music scene before actually, and when Elemental Groove Theory approached us about playing at The Union, we jumped at the chance,” said Erich Krapf, Soap’s guitarist.
The Grove, which will also perform tonight, is an emerging band that has started playing in Athens recently. Tonight will be the band’s first show at The Union.
“As a newer band, this gig is really exciting,” said Adam Forsthoefel of The Grove.
