Ohio University Habitat for Humanity will host its third annual 5k Run for Cover Saturday at Ping Center.
“I've run in the 5k in past years and think it's a great cause, which is why I chose to organize it this year,” said Erin Coyle, the event’s organizer and a senior studying biology and pre-med. “I really love being a part of Habitat for Humanity, and find it important to try to help raise money.”
In past years, the event has attracted as many as 100 to 200 participants and numerous sponsors including local businesses, Coyle said.
“Thanks to events like this we were able fund an entire student build recently,” said Alex Smith, a member of Habitat for Humanity and a junior studying biology and pre-med. “We want to do that again, but hopefully it wont take as long to raise the funds for it.”
Student organizations such as the lacrosse team have also become involved. Sponsors this year include Fluff Bakery and Catering, Follett’s Bookstore, College Book Store, and Donkey Coffee and Espresso.
“We have some incentives for the winners, both first and last place, so as to encourage non-runners to participate,” Coyle said. “Some of our donations are gift cards and coupons from some Court Street businesses.”
Several of the sponsors, such as College Book Store, have been running for cover the past few years.
“We just tend to get in with events that support the students and the community,” said Jean Arnes, assistant manager of College Book Store.
Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ping Center and the race will begin at noon. Registration fees are $15 and all proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity.
“It’s just a great thing to be doing,” Smith said. “I just hope the weather is good.”
