Dave Rave to up ante with party plans

Ohio University is already known for its ranking as the No. 1 party school, but local DJ duo Dave Rave thinks it’s time to make parties bigger and better than ever.

“Our New Year’s resolution is to make each show and each party better than the last one,” said Dave Alexander, who performs as DJ Time Traveler. “We have a lot of room to improve. We keep adding lights to our performance and have some great plans for the upcoming year.”

The duo’s goals for the year also include creating a musical reputation for Athens, while still hosting and creating parties, Alexander said.

“We really want to make Athens known for music and make it more of a hub for electronic music,” said Brandon Thompson, who performs as DJ B-Funk. “I mean, (Athens) is known and people know about (Dave Rave), but I want to make it more like the place to be.”

Additionally, the two plan on hosting more showcases, events and collaborations than ever before. On Jan. 28,, the duo is bringing in roeVy, another DJ group, to transform the stage for its two-year anniversary show.

“RoeVy has these masks and has lasers shooting everywhere,” Thompson said. “They are like the dark lords of electro, and they’re huge. They are probably the biggest act in Ohio.”

Starting out as just a party, Dave Rave has transformed its music into a progressive electric sound, mixing different types of music including dub step, house and techno.

“If you asked me a year ago if we would be where we are today, I would be like, ‘Hell no,’ ” Thompson said. “Now, people are starting to see us, and it’s really weird compared to how people used to react to this type of music.”

And the duo isn’t the only one excited for the two-year anniversary. Fans also have been gearing up for the party, which will be held Saturday night at The Union, 18 W. Union St.

“I went to my first Dave Rave last February, and I was blown away,” said Charlie Checklick, a Dave Rave fan and Hocking College student. “The lights, the lasers, all the fog and of course the bumpin’ music all made the party never stop.”
