Swimming & Diving: Training regiment pays off for 'Cats in strong victory

The Bobcats had a strong performance in their first competition after their winter break, defeating Denison 186-101 to pick up their fourth dual-meet win of the season.

Freshman Haleigh Bartlett qualified for the 2012 NCAA Diving Zones along with classmate Morgan Srail. Bartlett also moved into second and third place in the record books with her scores in the 3- and 1-meter diving categories, respectively.

Senior Abby Corcoran won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle while senior Amanda Cecere won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly.

Sophomore Rachel Stearns had two first-place finishes on the day. She won the 100-yard backstroke after finishing first in the 200-yard medley relay with Cecere, freshman Tori Bagan and sophomore Lauren Funk.

Coach Greg Werner was pleased with the results after a lengthy break.

“We were pretty happy. All in all, I felt very good with what I saw and the progress that we are making,” Werner said.

But Werner said he noticed some areas that could be improved upon for the next meet.

“One of the things we did see (Saturday) is we were a little sloppy with some of the details, so we need to work on that, but that is to be expected coming off a long training phase,” Werner said.

Stearns said the team’s training camp during break was thorough, as the Bobcats logged about 36 hours a week working on their craft. She said Saturday’s result was evidence that it was successful.

“Our training camp is definitely rough and it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it because it pays off in the end,” Stearns said.

She added that the win was a good measure of how the team could respond after break.

“We haven’t really competed in a while, so this is a good marker of where we are at this point in the season after we put in all that really hard training,” she said.

Ohio next travels to Youngstown State to face the Penguins Sunday.
