Track and Field: Bobcats gain solid start with first meet of year

After this weekend’s VertKlasse meet in High Point, N.C., Ohio’s track and field team is off to a solid start for its outdoor season.

Coach Clay Calkins said the field events were the highlight for Ohio this weekend, particularly in the throws.

Ohio took first, second and third in the shot put with freshman Donyelle Brown leading the pack, while junior Kristen Mason and freshman Janiece Rose followed right behind. Three Bobcats placed in the top ten in the javelin throw, with senior Hope McCarty taking second.

Mason, Brown, Alexa Macri and Rose finished second, third, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the hammer throw. Macri and Brown also took fourth and sixth in the discus throw.

Freshman Chanda Cuckler finished third in the high jump and senior Brittany Tyree took eighth in the long jump.

Three Bobcats placed in the top ten for the 800-meter run. Sophomore Melissa Thompson finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run.

The 5,000-meter run , in which a handful of Ohio runners were signed up to race, was canceled due to lighting,.

“In a lot of the events that we have traditionally started off slow, we are already ahead of the game,” Calkins said. “That has a great deal to do with the amount of training we were able to get in the winter season and it’s definitely going to benefit us in the outdoor season.”

Calkins also said that the first two weeks of the outdoor season have already shown a successful transition from the indoor season.

The Bobcats will compete again in North Carolina and South Carolina throughout March and will compete farther north in April.
