Rob Smith, Ohio’s coach for the last eight seasons, is retiring.

Baseball: Former Creighton associate coach Rob Smith to fill Ohio coaching vacancy

Filling a legend’s shoes is never easy, but Rob Smith will attempt to live up to the legacy left by newly retired coach Joe Carbone, who led the program for 24 years.

Smith, who was the associate head coach at Creighton University for six years, will be announced as the new head coach of the Bobcats’ baseball team at a press conference Tuesday.

The former Bluejay assistant served as a pitching coach, and his staff ranked in the top 20 in the nation for lowest ERA in his first five years on the job.

Before coaching the Bluejays, he spent five years at Purdue in the same position. In his time there, the staff ERA dropped by 1.7 runs per game.

Smith played for Vincennes University and Indiana University Southeast during his college days, and graduated from Indiana University in 1998.
