Center for International Studies executive director to leave Ohio University

After four years as a professor and executive director for the Center for International Studies, Daniel Weiner is leaving Ohio University for a job in New England.

Weiner’s new position as the vice provost for international affairs will begin this fall at the University of Connecticut. According to OU’s salary book, Weiner made $140,415 during the 2011-12 academic year, though The Post was unable to attain salary records for his new position in Connecticut.

“I am from New York and I went to college in New England, so this is a homecoming for me,” Weiner said. “This is an opportunity for me to go back to the region and to go to an outstanding university.”

During Weiner’s four years at OU, he accomplished a lot, said Ann Fidler, chief of staff to the executive vice president and provost. Weiner established new connections with international institutions, helped to organize programs and was integral in increasing international student enrollment, she added.

During the 2008 academic year, international student enrollment was 1,474 students, said Craig Cornell, vice provost for enrollment management. By the 2011 academic year, international student enrollment increased to 1,626 students.

Weiner worked closely with Cornell to not only increase enrollment of international students but also to ensure that the students felt comfortable at OU and were taken care of in terms of academic and social needs.

“We are never all about growing enrollments; it’s more about ensuring that students are successful,” Cornell said. “Dan has been able to tie academic oversight and administrative oversight to making students feel accepted, which has helped our enrollment numbers.”

The Center for International Studies is already in the process of interviewing for an interim executive director, and they are expecting to make an announcement the first week of August.

Even though Weiner is leaving OU, he expressed positive sentiments toward the university.

“Ohio University has a long tradition of international education and we are national leaders in international education,” Weiner said. “I have really enjoyed my time here and we have done some exciting, innovative things, and I look forward to hearing about all the initiatives that come out of the university.”
