Post Letter: Sheriff's intern program worth it for students

As the upcoming sheriff election draws near, there are a number of points I wish to inform you of. First, I must say that I am a senior at Ohio University. I am a double major in sociology-criminology and psychology, and I am currently an intern at Sheriff Pat Kelly’s office. I was able to have this experience because of Sheriff Kelly himself. He works with the sociology-criminology department at Ohio University and allows students to become a part of his staff for a given semester.

During this internship I have been able to do ride-alongs with his deputies, work alongside one of his detectives and even work in the evidence room. This exposure has made it possible for myself to have an active learning experience that will sufficiently be an aid to me in the future. Sheriff Pat Kelly has welcomed myself and other interns into his office for many years now. I cannot imagine another way that I could have gotten a better opportunity to obtain such a great deal of knowledge. With the election seeming just around the corner, these are just a few points that I found it essential to make. Sheriff Pat Kelly has made all of this possible for me, and he would for you too. Had the internship program been taken away, I wouldn’t have been exposed to the real-life learning experiences that I have been this semester.

Taking part in hands-on learning, just as I have, is so much more than just reading a book or taking a test. It is using what you have already learned in the classroom and applying that knowledge to real situations. I am so lucky to have gotten this opportunity. I truly cannot express enough gratitude to Sheriff Pat Kelly for making it all possible.

Brooke Paone is a senior studying sociology-criminology and psychology.
