Post Letter: Alassaf will be a refreshing choice for Democratic town

In a county where the Democratic Party tends to run unopposed (much as they govern), this election for county treasurer is an anomaly.

In it, Libertarian Abe Alassaf is challenging Democrat Bill Bias.

While Bias has more experience, a position like treasurer needs someone dedicated to honesty, independence, and lacking political connection in the county.

When evaluated from that angle, Alassaf trumps Bias. Athens County needs a new face; someone who hasn’t run Athens City Council, nor the Democratic Party, and someone lacking that baggage.

In an Oct. 4 debate, Alassaf said, “I want to serve this county, and this is my path to do so.” He’ll act like the government watchdog Athens County needs in this tight financial time.

Anyone who knows Alassaf can attest to his work ethic, honesty, and commitment to a government that’s small, and respects those for whom it should work.

His campaign pledge to make property taxes payable online would help expedite the process for many hardworking citizens of the county and demonstrates new thinking that Alassaf can bring to the treasurer position.

The election for treasurer shouldn’t be a partisan one; it’s questionable how political experience could bolster a candidate’s preparedness for the job, and political pressures would only muck up the treasurer’s efficiency.

If taxpayers want a friend in government, they couldn’t find a better one than Alassaf. Bias has worked in public service for 20 years; let’s give him a break.
