Post Letter: Rethinking why we vote

President Barack Obama a few days ago told his supporters at a rally in Ohio, “Don’t boo, vote! Vote! Voting’s the best revenge!”

If this isn’t a divisive comment, I don’t know what is. Americans don’t vote for or against a candidate because they seek revenge. Instead we vote because we love our country and know what a privilege it is to have a voice in who represents us in office.

The last four years have been a disappointment. Chronic unemployment, a government takeover of health care, record debt and deficits, less take-home pay, less domestic energy production, America’s standing in the world has diminished, higher gas prices, a record number of Americans on food stamps, a weaker dollar, and I could go on. The one statistic that sticks out in my mind is that one in two college students cannot find a job after graduating from college either in their field of study or a job at all.

I’ve heard people say that this is just the new normal, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We can chart a new course that will restore the America we know and love. An America that wasn’t just another country; instead, one that is on top of the world and other nations look to us for leadership. An America that attracts the most brilliant minds in the world to research and invent technologies to improve society. An America where the private sector is the driving force behindProxy-Connection: keep-alive

Governor Romney’s plan is simple: Get government out of the way in order to create more jobs and more take-home income. In hard economic times you have to lower taxes, which puts more money in our pockets to spend and invest with. Eliminating burdensome regulations to spur job creation is key. For example, in 2014 the bulk of “Obamacare” will go into effect, which will force millions off their employer-based insurance plans. We need to make use of our energy resources at home. We also need to cut our corporate tax rate, which is the highest in the world. To sum it up, let the private sector go to work and it can lead us out of this stagnate economic climate we’re in.

I didn’t get involved in politics at Ohio University to find a job as a staffer or whatnot. I became involved because I was concerned about my future and the future of our nation. The path we’re currently on is unsustainable. However, today, we together can make the choice to go in a new direction.

Let me tell you this: We will win Ohio and we will win this election. Then we will begin the hard work it’s going to take to turn our country around. Vote for love of our country, not because you seek revenge.
