Historical Society offers special events highlighting past Athens culture

As the new year approaches, the Athens County Historical Society is sponsoring special events that provide a glimpse into Athens culture of years past.

Starting on Wednesday December 6, the society, at 65 N. Court St., will be sponsoring events that will discuss topics ranging from archaeology to American wars to astronomy.

Hocking College archaeology majors will be presenting their capstone projects ––with many pertaining to the history of southeastern Ohio –– at the society from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 6.

The society will once again organize a discussion on the history of Athens County on Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. when it hosts a presentation made by Tom O’Grady about the architecture of the Athens Lunatic Asylum.

The following day, the society will delve into the history of the United States at large when it hosts a presentation at 4:30 p.m. regarding the life of World War I veteran Harry G. Henry.

America at war will once again be the primary focus on Dec. 15 when the society hosts a presentation at 2 p.m. about Civil War era clothing.  A follow-up Civil War costume-building workshop will be held at noon on Jan. 13.

The society will culminate its year-end activities with a change of pace –– a “star party” at The Ridges from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Dec. 21.  The party will include a tour of the former asylum, a presentation on the winter solstice and telescope viewing.
