Post Letter: Library's hours not long enough so late in term

Hi, I’m a first year grad student at OU. On Sunday morning I walked to Alden Library to start my research and writing for the day. It was around 11 a.m. and I was a little disappointed at my late start, thinking the library opened at 10 a.m. as they did the day before. When I arrived, I saw the hours posted on the door and realized they didn’t open for another hour.

It’s December. It’s the weekend before the final week of classes, a popular week for group projects and final papers alike. Many students want to get a (relatively) early start on studying for finals. Others need to research for their papers. Why doesn’t the library open until noon? Everyone has something they could and should be doing. It’s especially ridiculous considering most floors closed at 7 p.m. the night before. That’s a 17-hour gap when most of the books in the library were off-limits. Needless to say, it’s very frustrating as a graduate student to be so restricted so close to the end of the semester.

Michael Carrier is a graduate student studying film.
