Between the Lines: Friends eased pain of Valentine's Day celeb rejection

One month ago, while others were smelling fragrant bouquets of roses and unwrapping boxes of heart-shaped sugar, I was still struggling out of the humiliating mire of pubic rejection from my one true love.

See, at the beginning of February my future husband, Josh Groban, was preparing to release a new album (it’s called All That Echoes, and if you haven’t heard it yet, you’re silly). To kick off the release, a bunch of movie theaters across the country were broadcasting a live concert featuring — you guessed it — Josh Groban. And one of those theaters was right here in Athens.

I know. Take the excitement you’re feeling right now, and multiply it by 7.4 million. That was me.

I planned a trip to the theater with my friend Kristin Salaky of The Post’s culture staff, who shares my love for Josh Groban. Our excitement built.

Then disaster struck.

The pretty snowflakes that fluttered from the sky that night stranded the chariot that was supposed to take us to the show. Just like that, our evening’s hopes were dashed.

My good friends and coworkers at The Post were quick to note my devastation, and they took to Twitter en masse to urge Josh Groban to tweet at me to ease my sadness.

Their tweets kept piling up — and they got better and better:

“I once sang ‘You Raise Me Up’ to @RebeccaMcKinsey at karaoke. She cried. She’ll cry again if you tweet at her.”

“@RebeccaMcKinsey is stuck in snow and can’t see you tonight. Please send tweet or elephant.”

I never did get a tweet from Josh Groban (in his defense, he had thousands of people tweet at him that night), but what I got was even better. I got a lovely gesture from an army of friends who don’t even like Josh Groban themselves but still put up with my litany of love for him.

For that, I have to thank Pat Holmes, Joe Fox, Nicolien Buholzer, Sara Jerde, Wesley Lowery, Brandon Carte, Jess Cohen, Brian Vadakin, Sarah Grothjan, Taylor LaPuma, Emily Bamforth, Kaitlyn Richert, Will Drabold, Kelly Gifford, Sam Howard, Alex Felser, Xander Zellner, Allan Smith, Kelly Fisher and Jake Newton.

Just look at that list. I can’t wait to see their smiling faces front and center at Josh Groban’s and my wedding reception as I retell this story.
