Post Editorial: Casting light on faculty a priority in new 'Post' series

Ohio University has a little more than 1,000 full-time faculty members, according to the August 2013 OU Fact Book. Besides covering Faculty Senate and the occasional new hire or departure, we haven’t really shined the light on the staff as much as we think we should.

That’s where Institutional Knowledge comes into play. It will be a monthly special section where we will feature profiles of faculty members, news coverage surrounding the staff and highlight interesting work that some of our professors are completing.

In this month’s issue, which you can find on Page 4, we break down the different positions that faculty can serve during their time in Athens and take a look at faculty compensation by comparing it to other public state institutions.

Also profiled in the section is Andrew Kruetzer, who serves a major role in Ohio University’s sports management program. He will receive the 2014 Charles R. Higgins Distinguished Alumnus Award for serving as a mentor to many and making a substantial impact in education and the sports industry.

The university’s students and administration overlook the faculty too frequently, and The Post has been guilty of this as well. But we are striving to make a change for the better.

The faculty here is as busy as, if not busier than, students. Faculty members have families and friends of their own, extracurriculars and research — not to mention grading — to worry about.

If it weren’t for faculty, there would be no Ohio University.

Editorials represent the majority opinion of The Post’s executive editors.
