Women's Golf: Bobcats look to lower numbers at next tournament

After an impressive start to the fall season, the Ohio women’s golf team is headed to yet another tournament of intense competition.

Ohio will begin play with Ball State for The Preview, an annual two-day golf invitational that will be held in Fishers, Ind. on Oct. 8 and 9.

Ohio is preparing for good competition — the tournament includes 16 teams, including Akron, Bowling Green and Marshall.

Led by coach Kelly Ovington, the Bobcats are ready for anything that may come their way.

Last week at Penn State’s Nittany Lion Invitational, the team combined for 922 total strokes, placing them tenth overall. During the tournament, the Bobcats were led by freshman Hailey Hrynewich, who earned the lowest single-round score by a Bobcat this season with a 72.

Led by Hrynewich and senior Kristen Helmsdoerfer, the team will look to best its score total from last season. As the team is currently 75 strokes better than last year, they will need to shoot for a combined 651 to beat it.

Also making the trip will be sophomores Angela Codian and Lauren McKinzie, junior Julie Lechner and senior Kara Brinkmann, all of whom are looking to lower their scores from the tournament.

“We have two seniors, and both have played the course before,” Ovington said. “The course is challenging, so we will be tested around the greens and with our putting… The course is pretty forgiving off the tee area, but we have to have patience around the greens.”

Not only does Ovington have high hopes for the tournament, but good expectations for the season as a whole. However, she stressed the fact that the team needs to take a steady approach.

“We need to take it one shot, one hole at a time,” she said. “If we can meet our individual goals, it will help us meet our team goals.”

Tee-off is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 8 at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club on the par-72 course, which will begin in shotgun format.
