It's happy trails for Wayne National Forest as it undergoes improvements, thanks to new federal grants

With some cash and assistance from the state, Athens County hikers and nature-lovers will see an improvement in the trails in Wayne National Forest.  The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is allocating more than $2 million in federal grants to 15 recreational trails across the state as part of the Recreational Trails Program, which is administered by ODNR.

Wayne National Forest, like the other Ohio recreational trails, typically applies for grants each year by submitting a proposal for what the projects will be, said D’Juan Hammonds of the department’s Office of Real Estate.

Hammonds added that the Wayne National Forest will receive the money to maintain their trails, which, along with bridges, will be widened to accommodate for motorized trail users. Officials said that would make the trails safer for hikers.

“Trails are an important part of Ohio because they let residents spend time outside enjoying a wide variety of activities,” said James Zehringer, ODNR’s director, in a news release. “Maintaining our existing trails and adding new ones allows greater recreational opportunities for all Ohioans.”

However, he is unsure when the project will begin and how long it will take. Gary Chancey, spokesman for Wayne National, could not be reached by press time.

The proposal detailed improvements to the entryways and parking areas near the trails and the replacement of 11 bridges and one causeway. There will also be an additional 3/4 miles of a trail to complete the new Loop Trail, which runs through Hocking County.

The grants will also reconnect the southern portion of the Dorr Run Loop that was closed due to Nelsonville bypass construction. In addition, work will include: “the removal of hazard trees, light tread work on approximately 70 percent of trail, heavy tread work on 30 percent of trail brushing of trail sides, cleaning drainage dips and improving the drainage of water off trail surface,” according to the Recreational Trails Program.

The funds will also pay for educational supplies, such as safety brochures and responsible land treatment signs through the Trail Permit and Trail Patrol Programs.
