Post Editorial: International Week should be celebrated

With the advent of the “digital age,” we constantly hear how the Internet and technology are allowing us to become more interconnected with the rest of the world.

But those connections don’t exist only in cyberspace.

Here at Ohio University, we’re gearing up to celebrate nations and cultures from around the world during the university’s inaugural International Education Week.

The week will feature more than 30 events sponsored by a variety of Ohio University colleges and departments.

The university will even play host to Tan Sri Muhyidden Mohd Yassin, Malaysia’s deputy prime minister and minister of education, who will deliver a keynote address Tuesday; we think it’s an event students should consider attending.

In fact, we find it so important to highlight the wide range of cultures that coexist on our campus that we created a special section called “Crossing Cultures.” The section makes its fourth appearance today on page 4.

In case you’ve missed it in the past, the special page is printed every other Tuesday and includes profiles of international students and faculty, along with news from the Center for International Studies and even around the world.

Ohio University has created a myriad of bonds and partnerships with other universities across the globe — Japan, Germany and Malaysia, just to name a few.

And that’s not to mention the more than 1,880 international students enrolled on the Athens campus.

Many of them not only affect our university and the state of Ohio but also the nation as a whole. We can say the same for our international faculty members as well.

Be sure to check out the calendar of events on page 4 or at www.ohio.edu/iew, and if you aren’t able to attend an event, follow up with our coverage in Wednesday’s issue of The Post.

Our world is comprised of a collection of widely different people with different languages, cultures and strengths. Luckily for us at Ohio University, so is our campus. Get out there and discover it.
