Post Letter: Student behavior during sporting events is shameful

I am writing in regards to Sunday’s basketball game.

I see another has already written about it, but I still wanted to speak up. I have never seen such a shameful display of unsportsmanlike behavior from fans, specifically the students, including the band.

Mind you, I have been to lots of sporting events, including probably 30 or so Ohio State football games. There are always random comments from spectators — boos, yelling and making noise.

However, I have never before seen organized bad behavior at an event before Sunday.

Yelling “you suck” at opposing team players? Yelling at the ref? That’s to be expected from random individuals at various times, but all in unison? That means this is coordinated, quite possibly practiced, and it obviously occurs regularly at the games.

That kind of behavior goes beyond supporting your team — that is a shameful display. It spoiled my experience and tainted my view of the school. I was ashamed to be wearing green.

I will never again attend another OU sporting event. I have come to the conclusion that OU’s proclamation that they have the “best fans in the MAC” is not based on any valid observation or study.
