KELLY

Sheriff Kelly claims court orders try to 'discredit' him

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office issued four additional subpoenas to Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly this month, authorities said, but unlike previous subpoenas served to the sheriff, details are limited.

The new subpoenas come after a string of other ones as a part of a special grand jury convened by DeWine to investigate Kelly and his office.

Kelly said he could not disclose the contents of the subpoenas, but confirmed that the subpoenas were issued about two weeks ago.

“(The subpoenas) are different stuff than the others,” he said. “It is just people trying to discredit me for the next election, which is three years from now.”

Jill Del Greco and Dan Tierney, spokespersons for DeWine’s office, could not comment on the grand jury’s proceedings in the interest of protecting the ongoing investigation.

State investigators issued several other subpoenas to Kelly’s office this summer requesting Kelly hand over his confidential informants and other records.

Kelly attempted to quash the subpoenas and not hand over his confidential informants, but retired Summit County Judge Patricia Ann Cosgrove, who is overseeing the grand jury, forced Kelly to comply with the requests.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty, who is currently representing Kelly, could not be reached for comment by press time.
