Post Editorial: Families in today's paper need holiday help

The holidays are a time for giving and receiving, and donating is one way you can help make someone’s holiday a little brighter.

The Post sought out three families who have been through incredibly tough times and still manage to keep their chins up despite how hard it is to get by each day.

As journalists, it is our duty to serve the public. We decided to revive the Holiday Wishlist to serve as a platform for Ohio University students and the Athens community to help the less fortunate. It has been three years since we last published a wishlist, and before that, one didn’t appear until the early ’90s. We thought it was time again to try to spread holiday cheer.

Our wish is that our readers donate to bring a smile to someone who could really use one. And trust us, after what the Tippie, Travis and Huddy families have been through, they need something to smile about.

Even though they don’t have much to give, the families themselves help make Athens and their neighborhoods a better place. Take Linda Tippie, a grandmother of three, for example. Even after suffering from a car accident that left her disabled, she volunteers her time at her church by teaching Sunday School to first and second graders.

A car struck Erin Travis, a 39-year-old mother of two, two years ago while she was horseback riding, resulting in the horse crushing her skull. Today she is dealing with her son’s recent cancer diagnosis and paying the bills. However, she said what matters most to her is keeping her family together and happy.

After a rockslide destroyed their home, the Huddy family was unable to get any insurance money because they only had standard homeowners insurance — not the type that covers “earth movement.” Even though the rockslide destroyed their dream home, Tabatha and Chris Huddy are just glad that they and their 2-year-old daughter Abigail are safe.

We hope that our readers will consider helping these families, or anybody in need this holiday season.
