ACRN hosts experimental music at Casa Nueva

ACRN, Ohio University’s all campus radio network, will be taking its music from the web-casted radio station to the stage of Casa Nueva, 6 W. State St., with bands Trabajo, Mezzanine Swimmers, Giant Claw and Sector7G.

ACRN, Ohio University’s all campus radio network, will be taking its music from the web-casted radio station to the stage of Casa Nueva, 6 W. State St., with bands Trabajo, Mezzanine Swimmers, Giant Claw and Sector7G.

The performances are meant to help students recognize new artists and sounds that may not fit into their typical genres of music, said Megan Fair, a sophomore studying journalism and general manager of ACRN.

“It’s a real treat to see a not-so-normal side of Athens music,” Fair said.

Columbus artist Keith Rankin, also known as Giant Claw, will return to Athens once again following his 2014 Lobster Fest performance. Rankin said all music leaves behind “cultural baggage,” and his new music draws on all the experiences in his life, leading up to this album.

His music has taken a transformation of sorts on DARK WEB, set for release Sept. 30, drawing more from electronic and sampled sounds.

“I have started using my computer entirely to compose music,” Rankin said.  “I use computer sounds or sampled sounds, instead of analogue equipment.”

New York bands, Mezzanine Swimmers and Trabajo, will accompany Giant Claw for Friday’s performance after recently playing at the Goldrush Music Festival in Denver.

While Trabajo, a duo consisting of Yuchen Lin and TJ Richards, is experiencing the road for the first time, Mike Green, the sole member of Mezzanine Swimmers is no stranger to the tour life.

“I feel like (my music) is tied to the environment of Brooklyn, New York and that kind of lifestyle, and the environment there,” Green said. “Just walking around on streets, there is a constant collage of sound and noise. There are rhythms from the subways, cars and everything.”

Green plans to play a few unreleased songs in addition to the music from his year-old album, Cougar Opaque.

While Green said he considers his style to be similar to Trabajo’s, Lin and Richards’s style revolves around electronic dance music with samples mainly from the old traditional style of music from Indonesia, called Gamelan.

Trabajo’s performance will be a high energy set along with plenty of opportunities for the audience to dance, Richards said.

Sector7G is the workings of Athens’ native Matt Paul, who deejays original mixes drawing from a multitude of styles.
