Bobcats ready to compete at Redbird Invitational

The first tournament of the women’s golf season begins this weekend, as the Bobcats heads to compete in the Redbird Invitational.

With an entire summer of competing and two weeks of practice under its belt, the Ohio women’s golf team will head to Normal, Ill., to compete in the 2014 Redbird Invitational beginning Sunday.

The Bobcats will be playing on the Weibring Golf Club, a 18-hole, par-71 course that features few water hazards, but plenty of bunkers.

Last year when the team competed in the Redbird Invitational, Ohio finished in 6th place out of 14 with junior Angela Codian taking the top spot for the Bobcats when she finished competition in ninth place individually.

Codian returns to the team as one of four upperclassmen and is excited and expects good things of her team when they begin their fall season.

“We’ve played well at this course before and we have worked hard since we have been here at school, so we are just excited,” Codian said. “It is a building ground for the season.”

Codian and her teammates have had very little free time since the spring season ended, but the Bobcats are ready to get this season underway on a positive step.

Coach Kelly Ovington shares the enthusiasm for the team, not only because of the excitement of a fresh season, but because of the work her team has put in to prepare.

“I am extremely confident in this team, the field will be very strong and it is a nice size field,” Ovington said. “I see us having success here, I think there is potential in anyone on this team to win this event, even as a team.”

The field this weekend will play host to 16 teams, including four Mid-American Conference schools in Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.

A big field full of competition that will test the Bobcats early and help the team find their strengths to get them to where they want to be, the top of the leaderboard.
