Women's Center kicks off a new series centered around the teachings of Facebook's only female board member.
Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook and the first woman to serve on its board, believes “in the future, there will not be female leaders, there will just be leaders.”
She is the author of the book Lean In: Women, Work And The Will To Lead, empowering women to overcome power structures and strive for the top, a message that will be conveyed at Ohio University through a new Women’s Center series.
Tuesday kicks off a fifteen-session book talk focused on Lean In and the value it places on the power of women.
Sandberg’s novel can be purchased on Amazon for $15.87 hardcover or $4.99 e-book edition. However, owning the book or even reading the book is not the focus point of the sessions.
“It’s actually not a book circle. And reading the book is not required for joining the circle,” said Sarah Jenkins, program coordinator of the LGBT and Women’s Center. “The circles were created based on the concept and values in the book, but they are separate.”
Instead of merely reading the book as a group, the session will build upon its core values and unite women in a more personal and direct ways. The sessions will include stories from well-known female speakers that will allow for discussion.
“We are sharing personal stories so that we can see ourselves as agents within our own lives and also to gather feedback from others,” said Susanne Dietzel, director of the Women’s Center. “There's a need for women that want to engage on that level, it’s part of both personal and professional development and that's another area that the Women's Center likes to work on.”
Jenkins said attendance is necessary for this series to work. The first session will begin Tuesday at 1 p.m. and the fourteen following sessions will take place throughout the 2014-2015 school year, all offering personal engagement amongst numerous powerful women.
