Theft of laptops on the rise

Lock your doors! Police reports show burglaries on- and off-campus.

During the weekend, police officers in Athens had their hands full trying to track down residents’ personal belongings: especially laptops, and in one case, a 2011 Chevrolet Corvette.

The Ohio University Police Department received three theft reports from Aug. 25 to Sunday, one of which involved a missing 2011 Corvette. The person who reported the sports car missing on Saturday morning, according to OUPD’s report log, later found the vehicle on Court Street.

The complainant later thought the disappearance act might’ve been a prank.

Officers from the Athens Police Department are investigating a reported burglary, where three Apple Macbook Pro laptops were apparently swiped Saturday night or Sunday morning from a house on Coss Street. The laptops together cost about $5,000, according to an APD police report.

A fifth of a mile away and also on Sunday, another report of a stolen laptop was logged to APD. The report states that a residence on Kurtz Street was “entered and items were taken.” The ASUS laptop has a $900 price tag.

OUPD observed 13 drug-related offenses from Aug. 25 to Aug. 31. Five of those were on West Green, while a combined four were on the bike path and golf course. OUPD officers wrote a total of 10 citations and three summons pertaining to drug related offenses last week, according to the OUPD log.

The department also received two burglary reports last week. One of the reports stated that seven males were “causing problems” in Armbruster House just before 2 a.m. Saturday. Two reportedly intoxicated males were arrested at the residence hall.

Property damage was also included in the OUPD report log.

A report stated an unknown male punched a glass plate containing a fire extinguisher in Sargent Hall on Friday night. Another report states that a woman’s 2010 black Honda Civic had been damaged on Thursday afternoon.
