Editorial: Gunshots provide sobering reminder

“Gunshots fired on Court Street” are words that we, as students of this university and temporary patrons of this city, never want to write.

But, we wrote them this weekend, in the midst of the Halloween Block Party revelry.

The three gunshots, which were fired into the air just past 2 a.m. Sunday in the midst of an altercation that broke out on Court Street, are an example of how one isolated incident can make thousands of people feel unsafe.

The shooter, an unidentified man, has yet to be apprehended, though authorities believe they found the handgun used to fire the gunshots. No one was injured, thankfully.

Sometimes, living in rural Southeast Ohio — far from many of the tragic events that often dominate national headlines — we tend to think of ourselves as protected from spats of violence.

All it takes to change that is a gun pointed at someone instead of straight into the air. Tragedy can happen anywhere, and Sunday’s incident reminded us of that.

Thank you to those who worked to ensure the senseless act of firing a handgun into the air did not spiral into something more violent or panic-inducing.

We’re glad you’re all safe, Bobcats.
