Nelsonville woman scammed out of thousands of dollars

Nelsonville woman scammed out of more than $2,500.

According to a news release from the Athens County Sheriff's Office, a Nelsonville woman was a victim of phone fraud Wednesday afternoon, costing her more than $2,500.

The offenders reportedly passed themselves as the Miami Police Department, telling the woman they had her grandson on criminal charges.

The woman then sent them more than $2,500 on prepaid Green Dot cards, according to the sheriff’s release, for her grandson’s alleged bond.

Green Dot Cards are a popular payment method in scams because it’s often difficult to track the cards after they have been cashed.

After, the woman found out her grandson was not in Miami, nor was he being held anywhere on criminal charges.

The case has be referred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
