Uptowne Buddha will be playing 10 p.m. Saturday at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, 24 W. Union St., to “take homecoming to a new level,” Terkel said.
Sam Terkel, Ohio University alumnus and guitar player for Uptowne Buddha, describes the band’s sound as “hip-hop, neo-soul funk jam.”
The band utilizes a multitude of different instruments from a tenor sax and an emcee rapper to the traditional guitar and bass.
“A lot of us come from different musical backgrounds and kind of different socioeconomic backgrounds as well,” Terkel said. “It’s just like a fusion of things that often aren’t put together, (which is) how we can call ourselves a hip-hop jam band.”
The band will be playing a set with Jake Goldberg, better known as “Baby Hands,” former bass player for Uptowne Buddha and current bass player for the band SassafraZ.
“Sam and I were talking and we wanted to book a show together,” Goldberg said. “Buddha has these awesome new songs that I’ve learned and even new additions to old songs.”
Goldberg said he still reveres Uptowne Buddha for what it does though.
“I really feel like they are coming into their own with the R&B fusion writing style,” Goldberg said. “I think (the band) is definitely taking a name for itself.”
