Hockey: Ohio uses big third period to knock off D-III Adrian, 5-1

Ohio used a three-goal third period to finish a dominant weekend against lower-division foes, defeating Division III Adrian College 5-1 on Saturday night at Bird Arena. Goalie Ryan Heltion recorded 13 saves in the win.

Ohio put together a strong first period, but only came away with one goal to show for it. At the 11:16 mark, Matt Wipper swatted a loose puck past the Adrian keeper to give the Bobcats an early lead. Ohio had an 18-2 shot advantage after the first period.

After failing to execute on power plays early in the period, the Bobcats finally got their second goal of the game when Joe Breslin fired a shot past a screen for his second goal of the weekend. Minutes later, Adrian broke onto the scoreboard when it snuck a shot past Heltion to cut the lead its deficit in half, 2-1.

Ohio began the third period on a strong note, when Michael Palasics cashed in at the 16:26 mark off an Adam Sterenko assist to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead. The Bobcats were able to extend their lead quickly late in the period, as Liam Geither and Michael Harris each put together goals in the closing minutes to finish off Adrian.

Ohio won the shot total 47-14.
