As crime rate fell during break, counterfeit money, womens’ underwear were topics of concern for APD

Police responded to several break-ins and a case of sexual harassment.

Crime rates typically dwindle during the time Ohio University students leave for winter break, but law enforcement officers still kept busy with reports of a resident attempting to pay for pizza with a counterfeit bill, a man attempting to buy two females’ used underwear and a break-in at a Subway restaurant.

A call for service was made to the Athens Police Department on Dec. 16 after a female and her daughter were approached by a male in front of Casa Nueva Restaurant & Cantina, 6 W. State St., who asked to buy their underwear.

Police were unable to locate the male when they checked the area, according to an APD report.

Athens police also responded to a few break-in reports while students were away.

On Christmas Eve, officers responded to a reported break-in at the Subway restaurant at 914 E. State St. The incident is under investigation.

On another account, a resident reported Jan. 8 that his Mill Street home was broken into during the break.

Several of the home’s bedroom doors had been forced open, causing $1,000 in damages, though it was unknown if anything was missing. A window was also forced open, which caused all water lines to freeze, according to the report.

APD also responded to a burglary report on Dec. 28 at North Court Street. The report stated $2,000 worth of items were stolen from the person’s residence, which included two flat screen televisions, a pair of Air Jordan shoes and a Cincinnati Reds baseball hat.

Employees of Dominos at 12 Mill St. logged a report on New Year’s Eve with APD when one of their drivers was given a counterfeit $50 bill for pizza at the Carriage Hill apartments.

The person who gave the bill was contacted by police and later wrote a statement claiming he had no knowledge of the bill being a counterfeit, according to the report. That person was reported to have refunded the Dominos restaurant after the report.

On the university’s end, a bulletin board was pulled off the wall and broken at Alden Library on Dec. 14, according to a Ohio University Police Department report.

OUPD received a report on Dec. 17 about a broken door handle at one of the exterior doors at Peden Stadium. Upon inspection, the door handle had been completely torn from the door.

Additionally, a female reported her Canon camera lens was stolen from the fifth floor of Baker University Center on Dec. 19. The camera lens was valued at about $800.
