Editorial: Stand up and cheer for women’s basketball team

The Bobcats men’s basketball game on Wednesday offered one opportunity to show school spirit, and Saturday’s home women’s basketball game will be another.

We wrote earlier this week about how Ohio fans should remember to avidly support the Bobcats, even while the Buckeyes are performing on a much more illustrious national stage.

The Bobcats men’s basketball game on Wednesday offered one opportunity to show school spirit, and Saturday’s home women’s basketball game will be another.

For those of you who aren’t necessarily attuned to the successes of Ohio’s women’s basketball program, the Bobcats are having their best season in years and are tied for first place in the Mid-American Conference East division.

They boast a 12-3 overall record, are 3-1 in conference play and compete against Central Michigan at home Saturday.

The game is bound to be a good one, as the Chippewas are tied with Ball State atop the MAC West. If you’re looking for something to do Saturday afternoon and want to show some Ohio pride, we suggest you stop by.

The wrestling and hockey teams are at home this weekend as well, so there are plenty of options if basketball isn’t your cup of tea.

Ohio is 6-2 at The Convo this season but have played in front of an average of fewer than 850 fans per home game. (To be fair, the Bobcats played three home games during Ohio University’s winter break, the most recent of which was this past Saturday. Attendance for the men’s and women’s teams is generally low over break.)

The Bobcats did play in front of almost 2,500 fans at home on Dec. 3, whomping Morehead State by 20. We’d love to see a similar turnout for future games this season.

The team is giving us plenty of reasons to “stand up and cheer,” so the least we can do is oblige.
