Ohio maintains top spot in MAC

Ohio defeated Akron 71-55 on Saturday night to remain the best team in the MAC.

Ohio held on to its one-game lead in the Mid-American Conference after beating Akron 71-55 on Saturday night.

The win also stretched the team’s lead in the East Division to three games over Akron with four games remaining in the regular season. The Zips were the preseason favorites to win the East.

The Bobcats were led by junior guard Kiyanna Black, who scored 31 points.

Her performance comes one game after Ohio’s 73-61 loss to Eastern Michigan, which Black considered a wake up call.

If Ohio wins the next four contests, it will lock up the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament and will automatically receive a bye until the semifinals.

The Bobcats host Buffalo on Wednesday. When they met on Jan. 3, Ohio won 61-50 in the first game in conference play.
