Jackie O’s creates limited time space-themed brew to commemorate Space Studies Program

Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery has created a limited time brew, the Rye of Jupiter, in honor of the 2015 Space Studies Program, which Ohio University is hosting this year.

Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery has gone out of this world with its latest limited brew: the Rye of Jupiter.

The famous local brewery created the India pale ale in honor of International Space University’s Space Studies Program, which Ohio University is hosting this year. The program began Monday and will take place until August 7.

For Jackie O’s brewer Clark Benson, who designed the recipe, the combination of beer and space was perfect.

“I went to space camp and space academy. I’m proud to admit it,” Benson said. “I’m a big space fan. I love sci-fi and looking at the stars. There’s a lot of inspiration about moving forward and what the future has in store for us.”

Using rye as a grain and hops called Galaxy and Equinox, the Rye of Jupiter is named after the planet’s “Great Red Spot,” which NASA describes as an anti-cyclonic storm larger than Earth.

“It’s almost like a giant eye,” Benson said. “So I thought we could do that play on words with ‘rye’ and ‘eye,’ and call it the ‘Rye of Jupiter.’ ”

Colleen Carow, senior director of communications and identity management for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, said details like the use of those two hops really showed how much thought and work Jackie O’s put into commemorating the SSP and maintaining the space theme.

“I was told by (International Space University) leadership that they never have felt so welcome at an SSP before,” she said. “We have worked really hard to communicate with the community and make their presence known with community outreach and banners across campus and town. We’re excited to see how warmly ISU has been received.”

The IPA debuted at the program’s Monday night opening reception. Benson said it is only available while supplies last.

“Once it’s gone, we’re not planning on brewing it again — at least not for a while,” he said. “It may even be gone within the next month or two. Hopefully, it makes it through (Ohio) Brew Week (July 10-18), but people seem to be enjoying it.”

Benson said Jackie O’s has made about “12 kegs worth” but has already used about two or three.

Pints for $4 and growler fills are $11 and are available only at Jackie O’s BrewPub, 24 W. Union St.
