Seven Athens businesses vandalized uptown after incident with Cleveland visitors

Seven uptown businesses were found to be vandalized early Tuesday morning after two college-aged male visitors from Cleveland were caught with a can of spray paint.

Athens Police Department officers discovered seven uptown buildings vandalized after they caught two male, college-aged visitors from Cleveland with a can of spray paint, according to APD reports.

Officers saw the subjects running away from a house on South Congress Street at about 4:12 a.m. Wednesday, while a female yelled at them, according to a news release from APD.

The officers thought they were witnessing a burglary and chased after the subjects. They caught up to them in an alley behind 36 S. Congress St.

One of the subjects then threw an object into the alley, which the officers found to be a can of spray paint.

The subjects said the female resident who had been yelling was a friend of theirs.

Officers identified the men, but did not charge them with any crimes. APD is currently investigating the situation.
