TV: Nerds rejoice! Comic-Con unveils new ‘Sherlock,’ ‘Doctor Who’ trailers

To the delight of fandoms everywhere, the San Diego Comic-Con saw the unveiling of the first trailers for the Sherlock Christmas special and the ninth season of Doctor Who.

Hearts stopped and the mouths dropped everywhere as not only the first trailer for the ninth season of Doctor Who was unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con, but also the trailer and a special message concerning the Sherlock Christmas special.

TV shows and films often wait to premiere clips or trailers at Comic-Con as it's essentially one of the most important set of days in the entertainment industry. But not often are such incredible, gigantic, monumental reveals done in one day.

This is big. Remember to breathe.

Fans of both shows — as it’s likely those people are fans of both Steven Moffat-run programs — have been waiting quite some time for signs of what’s to come.

Sherlocks reveal came first.

At a panel Thursday, fans first got a special message from Andrew Scott, who plays an exceptional and delightfully wicked Jim Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis. It’s a fun video to get a glimpse of the Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Gatiss in a more laid back light.

The famed phrase that was delivered right at the tail end of the third season and nearly killed every viewer. “Miss me?”

Just when you think the excitement can’t get any greater, there’s an actual clip of the Sherlock Christmas special that is set in the Victorian era, compared to the modern day setting of the previous three seasons.

Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) continues to be a darling treat, and Watson’s (Martin Freeman) ridiculous facial hair has returned — only this time it’s bigger.

At the panel, Moffat said he hadn’t yet began writing Sherlock’s fourth season, but according to Variety, he said he knows where it’s going and how it will “sucker-punch you into emotional devastation.”

Great. Can’t wait. Although I doubt it can be worse than “The Reichenbach Fall.”

Fans only had a few hours to calm themselves down before their hearts and minds would explode again when the trailer for the ninth season of Doctor Who was revealed at its Comic-Con panel.

The trailer feels quite movie-esque, but that might just be from the frame size. Regardless, every second is packed full of moments to excite fans: Daleks! Clara (Jenna Coleman)! Missy, also known as The Master (Michelle Gomez)! Peter Capaldi’s very gelled hair! The beloved orange space suit!

Fans of the classic Doctor Who might be able to enjoy some of the shots more than fans who only know the “New Who” because it looks like Moffat is going back to the show’s origins for this season’s villains again. Sound off in the comments if you recognize any!

One person nearly everyone can recognize is … Maisie Williams!

The Game of Thrones star was previously reported to be a guest this season, but the trailer isn’t exactly telling which character she will portray. Some guesses point toward the Doctor’s daughter — a storyline that hasn’t been acknowledged since David Tennant’s years. One other possibility to consider is that Williams will be playing a younger version of the beloved River Song. Alex Kingston delectably played the fan favorite character from the fourth through seventh seasons. But River’s timeline runs opposite of the Doctor’s, so as he ages, she gets younger. It makes perfect sense!

Regardless, it’s a mind-blowing moment to see two fandoms collide.

With this little taste of each show, fans are now drooling for more, making it even harder to wait until September for Doctor Who and December for Sherlock.
