Derrius Vick was announced as the starting quarterback for the Bobcats 2016 season, Sunday.

Football: Ohio will move forward with Derrius Vick as starting quarterback

Coach Frank Solich announced Vick would be the starter entering 2015.

Ohio coach Frank Solich announced Sunday that redshirt senior Derrius Vick will be the starting quarterback entering the 2015 regular season.

The decision, which Solich made this weekend, comes four days before Ohio’s opener at Idaho on Thursday.

Yet, Vick said getting the nod to start during week one hasn’t altered his approach entering Ohio's season opener.

“I think each of us, the three main guys, all prepared through the spring, summer and fall as if they were the starter,” Vick said. “It just so happens you can have one guy and for now this is the choice we went with.”

Redshirt juniors JD Sprague and Greg Windham will be the backups.

Throughout the offseason, Solich continually said Ohio will feature two quarterbacks, with Vick and Sprague sometimes interchangeable.

“They’ll continue to get the same amount of reps, even if it’s clear cut one guy over another,” Solich said. “You’ve always got to have your second guy prepared with snaps because as we know last year, Derrius went down and JD came in.”

Vick played eight games in 2014, throwing for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns and four interceptions. The redshirt senior also ran for 390 yards and a touchdown.

The new starter said the decision shouldn’t affect the quarterbacks’ relationship going forward.

“I mean, it’s not like you told those guys they’re never going to play," Vick said. “You never know. The worst thing could go wrong the first play, and someone else is back in already. Those guys know we like to play a lot of quarterbacks so be ready.”

At Ohio’s media day on Aug. 10, Sprague said he and Vick help one another and want to contribute in anyway possible to win games.

“All I can say, is once my number is called, I’m going to go in there and give it my all,” Sprague said. “You can’t care about the other things.”
