Police Blotter: Athens County Sheriff's office called to Coolville over brother and sister's excessive name-calling

OUPD reported a combined 22 alcohol and drug related incidents, APD two individuals drinking in their parking lot and the Sheriff's Office had to break up an argument between a brother and sister.

Sticks and stones may break one's bones, but names just might get the police called.

On August 25, Athens County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to State Route 124 in Coolville because of a report that a brother and sister were arguing and calling each other names.

Once officers arrived on the scene, they explained to both parties that name calling is not against the law and if they couldn't get along that they should separate themselves, according to the police report.

The Sheriff's Office came to the decision that there was no need for further action on this case.

Later that same night, an Athens County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a woman after she failed to come to a complete stop at a clearly marked stop sign. 

Upon making contact with the woman, the deputy realized she had red bloodshot eyes and her mouth was dry with white saliva at the corners, which is commonly referred to as "cotton mouth". After looking into the matter, the suspect admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle and that she had smoked it, according to the report.

She was issued a citation for possession of marijuana and failing to abide by a traffic control device.

Another driver drove the vehicle from the scene.

Officers were called to Pete Smith Rd. Tuesday because for a report of the sound of gunshots.

When they arrived on the scene they spoke with one homeowner who stated that she and her friend had been shooting a handgun.

The woman then showed the officers where they had been shooting, exhibiting an area that had a significant backstop and was also in a safe direction, according to the report. No further action was taken.

During the past week, the Ohio University Police Department reported 9 alcohol related incidents as well as 13 drug disturbances.

On August 29 at about 2 a.m., Athens Police Department officers found several individuals drinking in a vehicle which was parked behind the APD building in their secure lot. 

Officers were able to stop and identify two individuals, however two others ran off and evaded the officers, according to the APD report.

On of the individuals that was caught was arrested for underage alcohol consumption and the other was arrested as a juvenile.

Both made the short transportation to APD.
