BedPost: How to maintain a long distance relationship in college

Both BedPost columnists are in long distance relationships and manage to keep them alive.

Q: How do I deal with long distance relationships while I’m away at college?

Finally, something I'm an expert on.

I've been in a long-term relationship for close to three years and it can be a struggle.

Athens is awash with beautiful people and sometimes it can be hard to stay in your lane. But don't fret my friend, we're here for you.

Firstly, know when to draw the line between friend and something more. This can be especially hard if you have an outgoing and flirty personality but learn to hold certain people at arms length. There's a fine line between harmless flirting and cheating; treading that fine line is essential to your relationship’s success.

Always be straight up with people, but don't be obnoxious about it. Going to parties can be especially tricky because you want to meet new people but most people almost feel obligated to wear a relationship status on their sleeves. I've met many a person who blurt out that they have a significant other — as if I'm dying to know — and expect me to walk away disappointed. It's almost as if they feel like they can't be friends with people of the opposite sex.

Lastly, don't cheat. If you feel close enough to someone to the point where you want to pursue another romantic relationship with that person, you need to have a talk with your significant other. No one deserves to be cheated on and everybody deserves to know the truth about their relationship. Don't betray that trust by holding back information.

Almost everyone that has been in a long-distance relationship has been in tough situations before and the only words I can offer you is that it gets easier with time. For those who continue to struggle after multiple months or even years together, perhaps finding someone closer to home is a better option.

Being away from the person you want to be with the most is one of the hardest things to deal with. A long distance relationship is definitely a hardship on any two people who care for each other. It's a necessity to keep in contact as often as possible. Going weeks without seeing your hubby is really upsetting, but the good thing about it is that when you finally get to see that person, it makes the time you spend with them even more special.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that he or she cares about you and even if he or she is far away, you can trust them. Don't let worrying about being cheated on keep you from enjoying the happiness of being in a relationship.

Relax, keep in contact and think about the next time you'll see them. It makes it all worth it.
