Editorial: Ohio University’s Survivor Advocacy Program fortunately has found its funding

The resource, which did not have officially announced financial backing, will finally be funded.

We commend Ohio University for doing the right thing for a campus organization that doesn’t often get that treatment.

The OU Survivor Advocacy Program will, thankfully, have funding even after its federal grant expires in October.

The program helps people during what is probably the worst time in their lives by assisting survivors of sexual assault, stalking and dating and domestic violence — issues familiar to OU’s campus.

OUSAP steps in when the justice system can be the last thing someone wants to consider, since the matters that the program deals with are highly sensitive.

The program has been in an unnecessary state of limbo since the university failed to step up and explicitly state how OUSAP would be funded last year. The funding was announced in an Op-Ed for The Post written by Pam Benoit, executive vice president and provost, and Shari Clarke, vice provost to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Lindley Hall is now the home for OUSAP, after it moved from McKee House in August, a positive change for the program because it has more space than its previous location. The new office now has a private hallway designated specifically for the program and its outreach, a necessary addition because of privacy concerns.

Providing confidential advocacy and support for students is a very important service that the university should not only endorse verbally but financially.
