Soccer Notebook: Bobcats working to find starting keeper

Ohio is still deciding on who will be the main goalkeeper as it continues to rotate among three youngsters.

Coach Aaron Rodgers can't solve the mystery of who's starting in goal.

After graduating goalkeeper Nicole Amari in 2014, the starting spot has been left vacant — or at least without a regular.

Rodgers has brought in three new keepers as options, but none have cemented their spot. Two freshmen, Erin Beurket and Taylor Smith, as well as sophomore transfer Vanessa Cordoba, have rotated throughout the first six matches this season.

Cordoba, who has international caps with the Colombian U20 national team, was the starter at the beginning of the season, but injured her back against Kentucky on Sept. 6.

In practice last week, Cordoba was seen with Beurket during drills and rotating repetitions.

Ohio's third-year coach, who played keeper professionally, has also used Beurket and Smith.

Sharing time in the net was Smith, who played the full match in Ohio's first win of the season, a 3-0 win Friday against Robert Morris. Smith's clean sheet was Ohio's first this campaign.

"All three goalkeepers have been working hard," Rodgers said after Friday's win.

He also said that nobody earns the start just because of their class standing or experience but how hard they work in training. So he felt it was fair that Smith got the start.

With only one match before Mid-American Conference play begins Sept. 25, Rodgers should have all three keepers available.
