Staff Picks: Ohio at Idaho

The sports staff attempts to predict Ohio's season-opening matchup with Idaho on Thursday night.

Ohio's season opener against Idaho begins at 9 p.m. (ET) and should test each facet of the Bobcats. The Post staffers predict what may happen.

The Bobcats open their season with a valiant effort in Idaho. Quarterback Derrius Vick should have a solid outing against a relatively weak Vandals' pass defense. It's also a battle of international cities (Athens, Moscow) and I'm going Greece > Russia.

For as much as we talk about the quarterbacks rotating through the game, it's important to understand how important Ohio's running game is to the team's offensive production. Each time I've spoken with offensive coordinator Tim Albin, he gets more and more excited about the running game. Expect the play calls to show that enthusiasm.

I have high hopes for the Bobcats in this one. This is a great opportunity for the offense to really put up some impressive numbers against an Idaho team that has really limped through the last two seasons. Not to mention Ohio's defense is loaded. If Ohio can't put this thing away early, it could really spell trouble.

Ohio's offense, very similar in personnel to a year ago, should have no problem exceeding Idaho. Moscow sounds like an intimidating place to play, but you know what isn't intimidating? The Vandals' 1-10 record last season — including 1-4 inside their unoffending Kibbie Dome.

Derrius Vick is starting under center and I have some faith in him. I think he can lead Ohio along with A.J. Oulette to an opening night win over Idaho. The game was relatively close last season, but I have a gut feeling it's going to be a little different this year.
