Jobs Biopic

Latest 'Steve Jobs' biopic to be screened for free at the Athena Tuesday

The new Aaron Sorkin-penned biopic Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender as the late Apple Inc. CEO and co-founder, will be screened at The Athena Cinema on Tuesday night.

Only two years after Ashton Kutcher donned the signature circular glasses and black turtleneck of the late Steve Jobs, Michael Fassbender is slipping into the same garb.

Fassbender is portraying the Apple Inc. CEO and co-founder in the new Aaron Sorkin-penned biopic Steve Jobs, which opened in select theaters Oct. 9. Bobcats, however, don’t have to wait until the film is released nationwide Oct. 23. Garrett Haptonstall and Universal Pictures, which produced the film, are bringing Steve Jobs to The Athena Cinema on Tuesday evening.

No tickets are necessary.

Haptonstall, a senior studying management information systems, is the campus representative for Universal Pictures and is called on to create buzz about Universal films being screened at Ohio University. Trainwreck, Neighbors and Dumb and Dumber To have all been screened in the past.

The Visit was screened Sept. 8.

“Originally, I was told to do roughly one (film) a semester and then last year was the first time I did two a semester, and I think we’re doing the same thing this year as well,” Haptonstall said.

Haptonstall does not have control over which films come to campus; his supervisors make those decisions.

Steve Jobs is already experiencing much more favored reviews than Kutcher’s critically hated Jobs. Kutcher’s film examined Jobs’ life from 1974 during his time in college up until the introduction of the iPod in 2001. Sorkin’s new film takes a different approach and instead only looks at Jobs’ life at three separate product launches — the 1984 announcement of the Macintosh, the 1988 introduction of NeXT and the 1998 reveal of the iMac. The film will highlight his interactions with his co-workers, played by Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen and Jeff Daniels, over that 14-year period.

Having two films shown per semester, Haptonstall said, has helped him build a larger following and increase interaction with his Twitter account @UniversalPicsOU, though he continues to rely largely on word of mouth to spread the word about the screenings.

Though he usually has free promotional items to hand out at the screenings, Haptonstall said he does not have any available for Steve Jobs. He added that he should have posters for Crimson Peak even though that Guillermo del Toro film will not be screened in Athens.

Ryan Panovsky said he saw Jobs and is excited for this new iteration.

“I really enjoyed the first one, and I love the story,” Panovsky, a senior studying management information systems, said. “I think the (actors) look like they’re going to be perfect for the roles, and I think it will just be another good movie. It’s also a free viewing and you can’t really go wrong.”

Panovsky said the significance of Jobs and his work is what makes him want to see two separate biopics about the man.

“This time period and this man being that influence is kind of interesting to view and see how it all happened and how it was all put together,” he said. “How one man changed the way history occurred. … How (Apple) went from something nobody knew about to something nobody can live without.”
