After spending $90,000 on emergency repairs for North Court Street, Athens City Council needs more money

Athens City Council will discuss putting more money toward Court Street repairs.

Just as Ohio University students have settled into Spring Semester, four members of Athens City Council will be introducing new legislation.

At Monday's weekly city council meeting, five pieces of legislation will be read for the first time.

As discussed at last week's meeting, legislation for the purchase of a salt truck will be introduced by Councilwoman Michele Papai, D-3rd Ward.

At the Jan. 25 meeting, Papai estimated the cost of a replacement truck to be between $80,000 and $100,000.

Athens Mayor Steve Patterson had nothing but good words for the outgoing salt truck.

"(The truck) has served its life well to the city," Patterson said at the Jan. 25 meeting.

Further amendments are being introduced for the 2016 Appropriation Ordinance by Councilman Jeff Risner, D-2nd Ward.

The Appropriation Ordinance contains information about which departments or projects have been allocated money. There are two amendments being proposed for the 2016 Appropriation Ordinance.

Another topic being discussed again in this week's city council meeting will be emergency repairs.

Councilman Kent Butler, D-1st Ward, will introduce plans for further storm water repairs on North Court Street.

At the council's first meeting of the year, Butler introduced similar legislation due to heavy flooding that occurred while students were away for winter break.

It will be the second time this year that North Court Street will require emergency funding. The first round of repairs totaled $90,000 for the storm water drains.
