A sign from Sarah Grace's campaign was seen on Park Place early Tuesday. The sign has since been removed.

Sarah Grace political signs on campus property may have violated OU policy

Political signs have been spotted near polling locations on campus the day of Ohio's primary election.

Political signs advocating for Sarah Grace, a Democratic candidate for the Ohio House of Representatives' 94th District, appeared within campus grounds Tuesday, Ohio's primary election day.

Ben Mathes, campaign manager for Grace's opponent Eddie Smith and a former Post reporter, said signs were present near both Jeff Hall and in the median dividing Park Place outside of Baker Center.

Smith, an Ohio University graduate student and Graduate Student Senate president, is another local candidate running against Grace.

OU spokeswoman Katie Quaranta said in an email that the signs on campus property are in violation of university policy, but the signs on Park Place are not.

"The signs on the median of Park Place are on City of Athens property," Quaranta said in the email, adding that those on campus property would be taken down.

As of press time, no signs can be seen on Park Place.

"I did not put out any signs on campus," Grace said. "I honestly have no idea who would have done that. I know that there are specific rules as far as how close signs can be to polling locations."

No signs were present within the cones designating the limit for how close signs can be to a polling location on Park Place.

Mathes said students may not know some signs may have been in violation.

"A nudge when you’re walking up to the polling (location) might be a big deal," Mathes said.
