Law enforcement issues more than 300 citations during 14Fest weekend

Agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit issued 232 citations to 133 people, and officers from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office issued 72, according to news releases from the agencies.

Law enforcement issued a total of 307 citations Friday and Saturday during the 14th edition of Number Fest.

Agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit issued 232 citations to 133 people, and officers from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office issued 72, according to news releases from the agencies. The Ohio State Highway Patrol also issued 3 citations at a traffic stop on Stimson Avenue.

Of this year’s total, 174 of the citations involved alcohol, according to the Ohio Investigative Unit. The unit said it issued 30 citations Friday and 103 Saturday.

Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith called the efforts a “kind of a joint safety blitz” during the event Saturday, according to a previous Post report.

Agents cited people for many violations including possession or use of marijuana, underage drinking and underage possession of alcohol. Underage possession of alcohol was the most common charge, with 69 citations, according to the OIU release.

The sheriff’s office used federal grant funds administered through the Ohio Department of Public Safety and the Ohio State Highway Patrol to promote traffic safety this season, according to the sheriff’s office news release.

“We enacted a selective traffic enforcement plan that pinpointed specific traffic concerns that have been identified from past festival experiences,” Smith said in the release. “This strategy began with a proactive educational initiative to include radio and social media public service announcements culminating with the enforcement piece,“

Sheriff’s deputies conducted 91 traffic stops, targeting overloaded vehicles and seatbelt violations, according to the news release.
