Students can make their own concoctions using ingredients found in the dining hall, like cheese fries using cheese from the salad bar at Shively and the microwave.

Hacks for each dining hall

Utilize the dining halls to the fullest extent by mixing and matching foods from different stations.

As the months pass, what once seemed to be an endless supply of new dining hall food becomes dull, and Uptown food choices that were appealing previously to the stomach can be hurtful to your pocket.

Save those hard earned dollars and don’t be afraid to mix and match the food choices at the dining halls to give your tastebuds some relief. Generations of Bobcat dining hall knowledge has been passed down regarding how to utilize the dining halls to the fullest.

Here are a few dining hall hacks to complete during your time on campus:

The District on West Green

This is the newest dining hall on campus and it also has the most opportunities for dining hall concoctions.

What was once a dull cafeteria-style dining hall blossomed into a food palace with pasta, food allergy, salad bar and smoothie stations.

The pasta station can have some good options like tofu, chicken and specialty pork to put into the carb-loaded meal.

If the station seems to be lacking in options one day, grab a plate and head to the salad bar, where the veggies are aplenty. Just fill that plate with what you would like in your pasta, bring it back to the pasta station and hand the plate to the student employee. The pasta-bilities are endless.

If pasta isn’t your thing, some students skip the part where the noodles are added and get some stir-fry.

Grabbing some rice from the pita station, veggies from the salad bar and a little bit of Sriracha can result in some prime stir-fry options.

Shively Court on East Green

On the other side of Morton Hill sits Shively Court, famous for its chicken tenders and quesadillas.

When the famous options get to be a bore, mixing those two stations create something that will have everyone’s eyes on your dining hall tray.

Head to the station where they’re serving burgers, fries and the occasional chicken tender option and grab some fries.

Cross the station boundaries over to the quesadilla and taco station to turn the standard a la carte option into cheesy fries.

Student workers will pour the melted cheese — usually designated for tacos, quesadillas and nachos — over those fries.

Take the cheesy fries to another level by adding in some bacon bits from the salad bar to create the ultimate dining hall-inspired cheese fries.

Nelson Court on South Green

Ah, the land of all day breakfast.

It wouldn’t be Sunday morning at Nelson without the outrageous line to get to the breakfast food. Among the sought after food options are eggs, sausage, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal and any other breakfast items one can think of.

The smartest Bobcats will head over to the bagel and toast portion of that station and create their own custom breakfast sandwich.

A little cream cheese on your choice of bagel will keep the eggs, sausage and whatever else you’d like on your sandwich together.

Some have even been known to substitute the bagel for waffles while making a breakfast sandwich.

The dining hall hacks available on campus are endless. While you still have a meal plan, don’t be afraid to experiment and create some nice food-related memories while you’re a Bobcat.
